We work in partnership with bus operators, local authorities and other organisations to improve the quality of bus services in the West Midlands.

In 2014/15 the total number of bus passenger journeys was 275.1 million. There are a number of operators, the largest being National Express West Midlands, which accounts for over 78% of all journeys made. The Rotala and Arriva groups also have many services in the region accounting for 8.5% of journeys made.

We subsidise £7.6 million worth of bus journeys in the West Midlands, and run the English National Concessionary Scheme for the region's over-60s and disabled, and half price travel for under 16s.

Socially necessary services are subsidised to run mostly at weekends, early mornings or late evenings. Whilst we cannot legally operate any of these socially necessary services, when a need is identified competitive tenders are invited from bus operators registered on our approved tender list. We provide bus stations and interchanges that allow passengers to access major centres and switch from one bus or mode to another. They come with the latest passenger information. All are fully accessible and have user safety and security in mind.

Bus stations are at Bilston, Bearwood, Coventry Pool Meadow, Dudley, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Wednesbury, Walsall, Wolverhampton and West Bromwich. There are also key interchanges at Cradley Heath, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield amongst others. Travel Information Centres offering advice, information and ticketing can be found at Birmingham Corporation Street, Dudley, Solihull, Walsall, West Bromwich, and Coventry. Birmingham New Street Station and Wolverhampton travel information centres are operated by the West Midlands Combined Authority and the others by National Express West Midlands.

The maximum desirable walking distance to bus services in continuously built-up residential areas is 400 metres between the hours of 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday (two journeys per hour), and 700 metres at other times (one journey per hour). Where possible bus services should link to local centres and interchange with the wider public transport network. These distances are reduced in areas of steep sloping streets or where a high number of elderly people or people with mobility difficulties live.

In less densely populated built-up areas the maximum desirable walking distance at all times is 700 metres, and in rural areas 1.5km (one journey per hour).

Passenger Information

Information is now available at almost all 12,200 bus stops across the region providing comprehensive information for all bus services, regardless of operator, from each stop. Significant investment has been made to upgrade infrastructure and introduce new information systems, digital services and network branding. Timetables, flags and maps are updated due to service changes, life expiry or vandalism and regular inspection, cleaning and maintenance is also undertaken.

A Roadside Information Recharging Scheme recharges bus operators for the provision of information at bus stops. This allows a uniform approach linked to the roll out of Network West Midlands.
